Public Policy

Thank you for your interest in our Public Policy page. As a private non-profit agency, we receive much of our funding from State and Federal grants. We regularly review public policy at the local, state, and federal level related to caregiving and community based long term care. On this page you will find updated information on public policy issues impacting family caregivers. We have posted a list of our local elected officials and the latest action alerts on issues impacting caregiving.   If you have a public policy issue you'd like to discuss or would like guidance on how to be an advocate and inform your elected officials and decision-makers, please contact us at ocrcuser@stjoe.org and put CAN in the subject heading or call our office at 800-543-8312 and ask for our Director, Claudia Ellano-Ota. We are happy to discuss the issues with you and provide guidance for your advocacy efforts. Caregivers may volunteer to influence public policy in favor of family caregivers by serving as advocates at the state and federal levels. The Caregiver Advocacy Network (CAN) is a list of caregivers and advocates that can be called upon to visit legislators, speak on caregiving issues to media or at hearings, and provide other valuable input. To learn more about public policy and family caregiving, link to Family Caregiver Alliance at www.caregiver.org and click on the tab for Public Policy and Research. There you can learn about a variety of issues and sign up for the Caregiving Policy Digest e-mails.
